Boasson Hagen sprints to Stage 2 glory – Boom retains overall lead

A tight squeeze for race leader Lars Boom

It was a triumphant day for both MTN Qhubeka and the Danish National Squad in Stage 2 of the Tour of Denmark. The African Pro Squad bagged a 1-2 at the sprint finish in Aarhus, Norwegian Edvald Boasson Hagen finishing ahead of team mate, Italian Kristian Sbaragli. Overall leader Lars Boom finished 20th in the same time, so retained the right to wear the yellow jersey for the 3rd stage.

A strong showing for the Team Denmark on Stage 2 of the Tour of Denmark

The longest stage of this year’s tour saw a strong showing from the Parentini equipped Team Post Danmark national squad. Lotto U23 rider, Mathias Krigbaum was part of a six man break that escaped, and built up a lead of over 4 minutes on the bunch. This group included 4 other Danes, eager to make a showing and it was Team Almeborg Bornholm’s Mathias Westergaard who, by the finish, had managed to bag enough Mountain’s Classification points to overtake Pim Ligthart for the climber’s jersey.

Sensing the impetus was waning from the lead group, Krigbaum attacked on his own, the former National Junior time trial champion soloing off the front, just in time for the live Eurosport coverage. The young Dane was impressive, showing strength far beyond his 20 years, and gaining great exposure for the smart Parentini Danish kit.

As the peloton eventually moved into action and Krigbaum’s lead dropping, a couple of riders launched an attack. Passing the tiring Dane, he somehow managed to latch on to the fast moving duo and contribute to another move off the front. It was no wonder Krigbaum earned the Most Aggressive Rider award for the day.

With around 10kms remaining, the peloton was back together – just. Rider after rider tried their luck to pull away but all were eventually brought back. Just before the 2kms banner, another Team Post Danmark rider, Magnus Cort, tried emulating the move of Lars Boom the previous day. An impressive attack created a good gap and looked like it might last until the line and give Denmark their first stage victory of this year’s tour. But with a strong MTN Qhubeka squad pulling at the front of the peloton, it wasn’t to be, the experienced and fast Gerald Ciolek leading out Boasson Hagen and Sbaragli for the final sprint to the line.
